Strafford Gate

The Strafford Gate before restoration and re-siting, in the Parkland at Wentworth Castle Gardens in Barnsley location - click here to view full mapAfter carefully dismantling the gate, each stone had to be numbered to aid the rebuilding.This photograph taken in June 2006 shows the rebuilding of gate well under way.In this photograph you can see the numbers written on the main stones.  This made sure they went back where they came from.The gate finally rebuilt in its current location.

Stone pedimented circular arched gateway constructed in 1768 along with the new approach over the Serpentine Lake.  This gate has been carefully dismantled and rebuilt a short distance away within the park thus allowing for a wider access drive into the park.

The work iinvolved full restoration including stone consolidation, replacement of lost features (ball finials), lime render to the rubble stone and refurbishment of the wrought iron gates.

Opening Times

The Gardens are open daily, April to September10am-5pm, last admission 4.30pm. From October to March, 10am-4pm, last admission at 3.30pm.
