Wentworth Castle
Wentworth Castle is listed Grade 1 and is home to the Northern College for Residential Adult Education. In the future the Trust will open the building to the public through guided tours on up to 60 days each year.
The roof is in very poor condition. Water penetration and lack of roof ventilation have caused major timber decay in the main truss ends.
We will completely renew the roof coverings, and repair or replace defective roof timbers. Rainwater pipes will be cleaned and repaired and additional fire compartmentation and access facilities will be installed to improve safety for ongoing roof maintenance.
The sandstone to the facades is generally in good condition at low level, however, the parapet balustrade at high level is unstable in areas and badly blackened with sulphate deposits and the cornice is badly eroded.
We will stabilise and clean the parapet balustrade and clean other areas of heavily soiled stone.
A new wheelchair accessible entrance, reception and lift to all floors is currently under construction in the north wing. We plan to add a wheelchair lift on the steps of the east wing that will replace the unsightly temporary timber ramp.
