The cross road between the Broad Avenue and the red shale path (known as Yew Tree Walk or Cedar Path) gives an idea of the 18th century formal layout of the Gardens.

Broad Avenue formed one of the main axes when laid out between 1713 and was originally lined with evergreen holly and yew.  From the 1870s hardy hybrid rhododendrons were planted here to provide floral interest in the spring and as cover for pheasant shooting.

A total of 90 hardy hybrids have now been identified in the Gardens.  Many of these are rare and no longer offered for sale, even from specialist nurseries.  Some have local connections, such as 'Handsworth Scarlet' and 'Handsworth White' both raised at a nursery near Sheffield, or the pink flowered 'Lady Stuart of Wortley', which is thought to have a connection with nearby Wortley Hall.
