Woodlands

The woodlands at Wentworth are part of both the ornamental and economic landscape.  They contained a formal network of rides apparently 22-44 feet wide, and were laid out in the star pattern highly fashionable in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Economically, the woodlands constituted a valuable source of timber, and were managed for the production of timber and bark. A document on sales of timber from 1813-4 describes oak, ash, elm, birch, alder and 'mapple' trees valued and marked for felling. The area of the woodlands and layout of many of the rides remained largely intact through to the end of the 19th century. The 20th century witnessed the marked attrition of Broom Royd and Ivas Woods to the degree that they are now virtually gone.
