The Rise of the Gothic: Follies & Fiction

Leisure Learning
Date: Saturday 23rd November
Times : All Day

Did you know that Horace Walpole, the author of the first ‘Gothic novel’, visited Wentworth Castle and declared it ‘a compendium of picturesque nature, improved by the chastity of art’?

This day-long course will discuss the rise of the Gothic in English literature, drawing from texts such as Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, Anne Radcliffe’s The Romance of the Forest, and Matthew Lewis’ The Monk. We will also discuss the relationship between the Yorkshire landscape and works by the Brontë’s and Bram Stoker, before bringing the journey to the present day with the continuing presence of the Gothic in modern fiction.

A must for avid readers!

Cost is £35 per person, which includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Booking is essential as places are limited.
